How To Use Prescription Scalp Medication

By prescribing your scalp treatment, your physician is giving you one of the strongest medications available to help your scalp condition. This means you should follow your physician's instructions very closely and use the product carefully. This medication should be applied twice a day, once in the morning and once at night as follows:

  • Part your hair over the affected area(s), and tip your head back.
  • Aim the pointed applicator tip, and gently squeeze the bottle to apply as small an amount as possible on your fingertip. Rub into scalp. Avoid face, eyes, and unaffected skin.
  • The medication dries very quickly, but that doesn't mean it is not working. Even if there is no feeling of wetness at the affected area(s) after application, you do not need to reapply.  A small amount is all you need.
  • Wash your hands after application.
  • A small number of people have reported a burning or stinging sensation while applying this medication. However, the sensation usually lasts only a few seconds and tends to disappear after the first few days.
  • After applying the medication, do not bandage or block the treated area(s) with a shower cap or any other covering (unless instructed otherwise by the doctor).
  • As with any prescription product, this medication is not to be used by anyone other than the individual for whom it was prescribed.
  • Use this medication as directed by your physician. Do not use it longer than the prescribed time period.
